Contamination Measurement Systems

Handling unsealed radioactive materials poses a contamination risk. Early detection of contamination through sensitive measuring instruments is essential to prevent the unintended spread of radioactivity.

Contamination measurement is one of our key areas of expertise, and we provide a comprehensive range of solutions, from portable instruments to full-body contamination monitors.

LB 124 Series

The contamination monitor LB 124 SCINT Series, with simultaneous and separate measurement of alpha and beta-gamma radiation, are based on innovative scintillation technology. The compact and precise contamination measuring instruments are versatile and can be used flexibly in practical radiation protection.

The LB 124 SCINT Series have an attractive and ergonomic design and due to their low weights they are easy to handle. The measurement results can be easily read on a large high-resolution display with backlighting, even under unfavourable conditions.

LB 147 / LB 148

Radionuclides are used in many areas of research, nuclear medicine and natural sciences. Wherever open radioactive materials are handled, contamination measurements by hand, feet and clothing are required in accordance with radiation protection guidelines.

The Personal Contamination Monitors LB 147 and LB 148 are contamination monitors designed for use in the radiation protection field to detect contamination caused by alpha and beta/gamma radiation. Low-maintenance thin-layer ZnS (Ag) scintillators are used as detectors. The operation is via a touch panel on a graphical display.

LB 1342 / LB 1343

Contamination detectors with ZnS scintillators use a single scintillator made of zinc sulfide (ZnS) to measure the radioactivity. The radiation to be measured strikes the scintillator. The resulting flashes of light are conducted by a suitable reflector to a photomultiplier with a suitable preamplifier and discriminator stage and measured. Using special evaluation and correlation circuits, the individual types of radiation such as alpha and beta/gamma/X-ray radiation are distinguished, separated and measured simultaneously (patented by BERTHOLD). Part of the spillover of alpha particles into the beta channel is corrected by software.

Results can be displayed either as a count rate (cps = counts per second) or as area activities (Bq/cm²). A metal grid protects the entrance window of the detector against damage.

Currently, two scintillator probes are available: LB 1342 with 170 cm² surface and LB 1343 with 345 cm² surface.

Activity Measurement Systems

In order to meet radiological safety regulations for handling radioactive substances different sampling  methods are used in the laboratory to measure activity such as smear samples, aerosol filters and evaporation residues. Environmental, drinking water and foodstuff samples may require the measurement of radioactivity and Berthold supplies well-proven and easy to operate instruments for these tasks.

Berthold offers several instruments for alpha-, beta or gamma counting. Especially for environmental samples or wipe tests there are low or even very low detection limits required. Our low-level counters meet these requirements. They use special background reduction techniques, selected detector materials and lead shieldings to provide excellent detection limits.

LB 790 / LB 761

The 10-Channel Low-Level Counter LB 790 allows simultaneous and separate measurements of low activities for alpha and beta radiation emitting radionuclides with a detection limit of approx. 12 mBq for Alpha (Am-241) and approx. 22 mBq for Beta (Sr-90).

The measuring system LB 761 Alpha-Beta Low-Level Counter for 200 mm Planchets allows the simultaneous measurement of alpha- and Beta- activity of a sample in two separate measuring channels. The background count-rates of the system LB 761 are extraordinarily low, so that good detection limits can be achieved.

LB 2046

The Alpha-Beta-measuring station LB 2046 or LB 2046-130 was developed for the simultaneous determination of alpha and beta activities in different measuring samples, e.g. in nuclear or nuclear chemical plants, as wipe tests or as residuals of evaporation. In the same way, general environmental samples or filters from dusting units can be tested for their activity.

The large area ZnS(Ag) scintillation detector with a diameter of 60 mm or 130 mm is best suited for the measurement of alpha- and beta/gamma-radiation and is covered by a light-proof, aluminized hostaphan foil (0.4 mg/cm²).

LB 201

Ensuring food and its ingredients are safe to eat and meet international limits has become increasingly important after nuclear accidents, such as Fukushima in 2011 and Chernobyl in 1986. The Becquerel Monitor LB 201 reliably detects gamma activities in food samples, liquids and smaller bulk goods.

From switching on the device to the result of the measurement is just a few steps. The simple software of the evaluation unit guides even users without prior knowledge to the measuring result with ease. Thereby, the use of a Marinelli sample cup made of plastic ensures a consistent measuring geometry.

Dose and Dose Rate Measurement Systems

Whoever works with radiation sources or X-ray machines in laboratories, radiology, radiography or in other technical irradiation facilities should be informed about current radiation levels at all times. With dose and dose rate monitors from Berthold you will quickly and reliably detect any increase in dose rate in the workplace that could lead to an undesired exposure of personnel.

Berthold provides several products for area monitoring in gamma and neutron radiation fields. These products cover a wide range of radiation levels or energy ranges.

LB 134 UMo II

The LB 134 Universal Monitor II can be used for the measurement of radioactive alpha and beta/gamma contaminations, for the determination of activities, as well as for the determination of the gamma and neutron dose rate in the parameter ambient equivalent dose and dose rate H*(10).

A large number of different detectors can be connected to the base unit for this purpose.

By integrating a Geiger-Müller counter tube it is possible to measure the gamma dose rate without connecting an additional external detector.

LB 6500 - H10

The LB 6500 - H10 is a Geiger-Mueller Dose Rate Probe used in various radiation protection applications; dose rate probe for environmental gamma-monitoring or for local dose rate measurement.

The measured quantities are ambient dose equivalent H*(10) and ambient dose rate equivalent ?*(10).

The dose rate probe exists in 2 versions:

1. LB 6500-4-H10 Low dose rate ≤ 10 mSv/h

2. LB 6500-3-H10 High dose rate ≤ 1 Sv/h

LB 6411

The LB 6411 neutron probe is designed for measurement of the ambient dose equivalent for neutrons

The neutron dose rate probe LB 6411 has an extremely high sensitivity of approx. 3 pulses per nSv and can be used both as a portable measuring device and as a stationary monitor. Major areas of application are reactors and the nuclear fuel cycle in the nuclear technical field, accelerators in research, and the use of neutron sources in the industrial field.
