Emerson Rosemount Tank Gauging

TankRadar Rex Tank Gauging System (Old Model)

With oil prices skyrocketing and showing no signs of slowing down, the mantra "Every Drop Counts" has become a stark reality for every bulk oil/chemical storage terminal, refinery, and petrochemical company that processes and stores their products in large storage tanks. Emerson's Rosemount Radar-based (microwave) Tank Gauging System has emerged as the solution to meet the pressing need for a highly reliable, dependable, accurate, safe, and cost-effective system.

To learn more about our state-of-the-art Rosemount Tank Gauging System, feel free to explore and download the most sought-after information, including the datasheet, engineer's guide to level measurement, tank gauging system, and the latest topics on API 2350 overfill safety and protection.

Our Rosemount Tank Gauging System is a complete and flexible tank gauging solution with SIL2 and SIL 3 certification for the Independent High Level Alarm (IHLA). The radar gauge can be fitted with a 2-in-1 electronic module, requiring only one tank opening to install the radar gauge for both custody transfer level measurement and IHLA with remote Proof-testing. Our Tank Gauging system is versatile, modular, flexible, and easy to maintain under operational conditions, catering to every need in terms of operational efficiency and budget. It is future-proof, and the cabling and installation are simple and straightforward, enabling cost savings through the adoption of the FISCO (Fieldbus Intrinsically Safe Concept).

The system includes cost-effective alternatives for each performance class. It can be configured with:

  • Highest accuracy for custody transfer/ inventory control to achieve "every drop counts" objective.
  • To safeguard tank overfill while ensuring maximum throughput.
  • Remote Proof Testing to ensure highest operational safety
  • Medium accuracy required primarily for operational control for a mixture of tank and products.

The Multiple Spot Temperature sensor (MST) is a high-quality and reliable temperature measurement device that utilizes Pt-100 spot elements positioned at various heights within a tank. This configuration enables the sensor to provide both a tank temperature profile and an average temperature reading. Importantly, only the fully immersed elements are utilized to accurately determine the product temperature.

The horn antenna gauge is specifically designed for convenient installation on 200 mm (8-in.) or larger nozzles on fixed roof tanks. It is suitable for measuring a variety of oil products, except for asphalt and similar substances, for which the parabolic antenna gauge is recommended. The RTG 3920 comes with a flange for straight installation or one for inclined installation. The inclined flange is utilized for installations near the tank wall where maximum accuracy is essential, while the straight flange is used in other cases. Typically, installation can be carried out without the need to take the tank out of operation.

TankRadar Rex is tailored for use in refineries, tank terminals, and the petrochemical industry, offering precision for custody transfer, process control, inventory management, and safe tank filling. On the other hand, the RTG 3930 gauge is designed for fixed roof tank installations, capable of measuring a wide range of products from clean substances to bitumen/asphalt.

Its parabolic antenna design ensures exceptional tolerance against sticky and condensing products, and the large antenna diameter provides high gain and signal to noise ratio. Furthermore, this gauge can be installed on existing manhole covers and can also be employed on tanks with floating roofs, where it is positioned at the tank top to measure the distance down to a target plate on the floating roof. Typically, installation can be carried out without the need to take the tank out of operation.

The RTG 3950, featuring a small-sized array antenna, is designed for installation on existing still-pipes. It is commonly used in crude oil tanks with floating roofs and gasoline/product tanks, regardless of the presence of inner floating roofs. To achieve custody transfer accuracy, the gauge utilizes the Low Loss Mode, a TankRadar innovation, to transmit radar waves in the center of the pipe, virtually eliminating accuracy degradation caused by rust and product deposits inside the pipe. The RTG 3950 is available for 5-, 6-, 8-, 10-, and 12-inch pipes. Additionally, there are two versions of the RTG 3950: fixed and inclined. The inclined version is equipped with a hinged hatch, allowing full pipe size product sampling or verification hand-dips. Typically, installation can be carried out without the need to take the tank out of operation.

The RTG 3960 gauge is specifically designed for measuring the level of liquefied gas in LPG or LNG tanks, with a still-pipe ensuring a strong echo even under surface boiling conditions. Radar signals are transmitted inside the still-pipe, and the pressure sealing features a quartz/ceramic window approved for use in pressurized vessels. Additionally, the gauge can be equipped with a fire-proof ball valve and a vapor space pressure sensor as an option, the latter being necessary for achieving the highest accuracy. Moreover, a patented reference device function allows for measurement verification while the tank is in operation.

This function involves a reference pin mounted in a still-pipe hole and a deflection plate with a reflection ring at the lower pipe end, providing measured distance values that are compared with stored positions. Installation is typically carried out with the pressurized tank taken out of operation.

Data Acquisition Unit (DAU 2100) is in conjunction with a Radar Tank Gauge for local readout and temperature sensor connection.

The DAU is powered by and communicates through the radar gauge, and it's designed to be intrinsically safe through the use of zener barriers on the Transmitter Interface Card (TIC) within the gauge. The weatherproof box houses a printed circuit board with a cable terminal for connection of the temperature sensors, as well as the power and communication cable. Cable glands are located at the bottom of the box.

The RDU 40 is indeed a robust display unit suitable for outdoor use in hazardous areas. It's the most cost-effective option for field display when there are 6 or fewer temperature elements per tank. In such cases, the temperature elements can be directly connected to the radar level gauge without needing a Data Acquisition Unit (DAU).

Additionally, the RDU 40 can be connected by a 3-wire cable up to 100 m (330 ft) from the gauge, and up to two units can be connected to the same TankRadar Rex gauge

The Water Level Sensor (WLS) plays a crucial role in determining water content in a tank, particularly at the bottom of an oil storage tank where water may be present. By measuring the water level, the correct product volume in the tank can be accurately calculated.

The Field Communication Unit (FCU) is a data concentrator that continuosly polls data from field devices such as Radar Tank Gauges, Data Acquisition Units and Remote Display Units and stores them in a buffer memory. Whenever a request for data is received, the FCU can immediately send data from a group of tanks from the updated buffer memory.

The FCU acts as a slave on the group bus and as a master on the field bus. The unit has six communication ports. The ports can be individually configured as either group bus ports or as field bus ports.

The 2180 Field Bus Modem is used for connecting the TRL2 field bus from Rosemount Tank Gauging field devices or the 2460 System Hub, to the TankMaster PC in the control room. It is connected to the PC using either the RS232 or the USB interface.

The modem has LEDs to indicate power-on and communication, and if required front panel switches to set gain and termination. The mounting kit enables fitting to a standard DIN rail.
