Ultrasonic Flow Meters - Hydro

High-performance CALDON LEFM Ultrasonic Flow Meters deliver a rapid ROI and increased uptime in custody transfer, allocation, and leak detection applications. The products’ patented internal designs, measurement precision, compact footprint, and low pressure drop help operators reduce measurement uncertainty and operating costs.

The CALDON LEFM 880 Series Hydroelectric Ultrasonic Flow Meter system is designed to deliver highly accurate and reliable flow measurement for large pipes, hydroelectric penstocks, and open channels. It comprises electronics and transducers, with each transmitter capable of operating with up to eight pairs of transducers, enabling optimized velocity profile integration in various hydraulic conduits.

This advanced flowmeter system incorporates several state-of-the-art features that offer significant improvements in reliability, accuracy, and data management over competitive systems. For instance, it includes an integral display and digital and analog output capability, and its NEMA 4/IP 66 enclosure is tailored for rugged or remote applications.

The system's transit-time flow meters rely on precise timing of ultrasonic signals transmitted between transducer pairs. Utilizing advanced signal processing techniques, the CALDON LEFM 880 Series extends its operating range in applications with solids, aeration, or ray bending. It employs a cross-correlation method to enhance signal-to-noise ratios and incorporates automatic gain control (AGC) and zero-crossing detection for the highest possible timing accuracy.

With internal processing optimized for measurements up to 50 Hz, this flow meter ensures significantly improved signal and data processing. Additionally, it utilizes deviation and median filters to eliminate data errors and provide smooth outputs, resulting in improved performance and faster response to actual flow changes.

The utilization of dual oscillators ensures long-term accuracy and reliability, offering better assurance of timing accuracy than a simple software-driven self-test.

CALDON Hydro Transducers for Large Pipes

The 8001 transducer is a 1-MHz type suitable for high-accuracy measurement in large pipes. The feedthrough assembly is specifically engineered to facilitate the retraction and removal of the transducer even when the pipe is under pressure.

Moreover, the 8001/8002 setup incorporates dual retaining pins and a tamper-resistant pin guard/retainer, offering features that may not be available elsewhere. These additional features can contribute to enhanced safety and reliability in operation.

8003 transducers and 8004 feedthrough assemblies are designed for installation on exposed pipes and penstocks from 20" to 48" in diameter. These assemblies are specifically designed for use in smaller pipes where protrusion of the transducers into the flow is minimized in order to maintain high measurement accuracy. However, the transducer still retains a radial feedthrough for ease of installation on existing pipes. Additionally, the feedthrough design utilizes a standard Thread-O-Let® fitting.

CALDON Hydro Transducers for Buried Pipes and Tunnels
The 8010 transdcers and 8011 mount assemblies are suitable for pipes and tunnels ranging from 5 ft to 25 ft in diameter, featuring a 1-MHz transducer designed for high-accuracy measurement in large conduits.

On the other hand, the 8005 transducers and 8006 mount assemblies are intended for use in buried pipes and tunnels ranging from 8 ft to 35 ft in diameter. The 8006 mount assembly is specifically designed to minimize flow disturbance over the transducers and incorporates a waterproof connector, allowing for transducer replacement without the need for splicing or rerouting cables.

The CALDON LEFM SystemLink diagnostic software is included with the 200 and 300 models of CALDON LEFM Ultrasonic Flow Meters, CALDON SoundTrack interface detectors, and CALDON SoundTrax interface detectors.

This software serves as an interface between the LEFM meter electronics and your PC, allowing for a serial or ethernet connection. It features a user-friendly installation wizard and requires a RS232/RS485 converter for serial connections. The software offers a main display overview, signal diagnostics, and a health summary page.

As of August 2020, the CALDON LEFM SystemLink software has been replaced by the CALDON USM Measurement Advisor condition-based monitoring and configuration software. The CALDON USM Measurement Advisor is compatible with CALDON LEFM 200 and 300 flowmeters with G3 electronics delivered after October 2015.
